"This is exactly where we started! Face it, Iggy. We're lost." Mercedes crossed her arms over her chest, a pout across her features, anger in her blue eyes.
"We're still on school grounds, though. Look- Cypress Academy." Nate lifted a hand to point at the words on the sign. They'd reached the destination. They were enrolled in the Japanese academy, given dorms to stay in, and told to meet a tour guide as soon as they arrived.
"I know. You read it last time we were here. It's the same sign!" Mercedes scolded. As if she couldn't read it herself. He pointed to that sign both times like it was an accomplishment to make it this far- boys were so silly! The sign meant nothing. There was no accomplishment until he could tell her which of the buildings was supposed to be the dorm.
"Maybe there are two gates." Nate shrugged. It seemed possible to him. They could have walked across campus, getting to the other side. It wasn't likely, because, well, Sadie was right. It looked an awful lot like the gate they'd passed on the way in.
"Boys! Excuse me, miss? My brother has got us very lost. We were supposed to meet a tour guide-" Sadie was done. Seeing Chris pass she stepped towards the girl, reaching out to lightly brush her left hand against the girl's shoulder- a clear sign she meant Chris and not anyone else. Maybe her stubborn brother wouldn't ask for directions, but Sadie had no problem with it.
"Nearly two hours ago. Our plane got in late. That wasn't my fault." Nate interrupted. It also wasn't his fault that they'd spent so long on the grounds. Mercedes liked to sit down, to chat with others, to admire the flowers, or the benches, or fountains- really, anything that was purposely put there as decorative was fair game for her attention. He'd been patient, sitting, even conversing with her as if they hadn't talked during their flight here. Truth be told, his sister was almost always talking to him.
"Sooo! Would you mind helping us find the dorms?" Mercedes quizzed, acting as if Nate hadn't spoken. She wasn't ready to forgive her twin that easily- he'd had her walking around for forty-five minutes! Which wouldn't have been so bad if she hadn't been carrying around her heavy messenger bag- her carry on from the flight, in fact. Her brother had his backpack too, filled with his stuff and those things of hers she couldn't fit into her own bag.
"If you're busy, we can find it." Nate interjected, hoping to give Chris an out if she was busy. What if she was headed to class? It was nearly afternoon, after all. Or, what if she didn't want to walk across campus with them? He wouldn't blame her.
"No we can't. You tried for an hour. Please, help us." Mercedes pleaded. Nate shook his head. It wasn't like they were lost in the desert. It was a school campus, and it was nice out. The sun was shining. What did she have to complain about?
