Kai is probably one of the hardest people to befriend. He is suspicious of everyone around him, especially strangers. It takes him awhile to warm up to people especially considering how sharp-tongued he can be, which can keep a lot of people from wanting to hang with him. Fear and distrust, has given him a bad habit of verbally lashing out at people.
He is quick to insult people, without really thinking of how it may make the other person feel. However being the observant person he is, he can usually tell how his words affect people. If he sees he has hurt that person, he instantly starts to regret his actions. However he doesn't really know how to react to people he can't really trust, so he doesn't know any other way to interact with them than to insult them.
Even with close friends you may find yourself on the receiving end of a tongue-lashing. That usually only happens if someone makes him lose his temper. While he may have a tendency to hurt someone with his words, he would never physically hurt anyone. And he won't tolerate physical violence coming from other people either.
Surprisingly enough he acts completely different when it comes to Andre. He is probably one of the only ones who has never been on the receiving end of a tongue-lashing. He is nothing but nice to him and has never once insulted him. In fact he gets pretty angry at anyone who would insult Andre. And he also gets concerned easily when it comes to his friend. Some people believe his feelings for the other male is what causes the difference in personality when it comes to him and those around him.

BIOGRAPHY
For as long as he can remember Kai was on his own. He was left on the doorstep of an orphanage with nothing but a note stating his name was Kaito. His life in the orphanage was a living nightmare. The people who ran the orphanage saw him as nothing but another mouth to feed. The other orphans got nice clothes and good food but not Kai. Kaito got clothes that were practically falling apart and whatever food was never left over. He could never understand why he was treated so badly, what made the other orphans so much better than him. Why was he the only one that was cast aside. It wasn't until he was five that he got so clue as to why he was treated so differently. This all about revenge, though it wasn't because of anything Kai had done.
Apparently there was some bad blood between Kai's birth parents and the people who ran the orphanage. Since his parents weren't around to have their lives ruined, they had decided to make Kai's life miserable. It was bad enough his parents had abandoned him, now his life was miserable because of them. If his parents ever returned he would not accept them. Just like he wouldn't forgive the people of the orphanage. He was only a kid and it wasn't fair to make him suffer because of his parents mistakes, he didn't know what his parents had done but he vowed to never do anything he would regret. He would never let himself get close to anyone, he would be better off on his own.
When he was ten years old he finally had enough and ran away from the orphanage. The fact he would have to take care of himself didn't really bother him. It wasn't like he hadn't had to care for himself before. A few months after running away he met Andre. At first the other male annoyed him but no matter what he did the other male refused to leave him alone. He had tried telling the other male to leave him alone and when that hadn't worked he had tried to avoid the other male. Andre was persistent though, and neither of those actions had worked. Eventually he gave up on trying to get the other male to leave him alone, so he just gave up and let the other male travel with him.
It wasn't long before he found out the other male was a vampire. It was kind of hard to hide something like that when you're constantly with someone. The fact his companion was a vampire didn't bother him though. Andre was the only person who had treated him well after all. This fact alone was what made him trust the other male. Andre was definitely the first person he had ever trusted. Putting his trust in another person was new to him and it made him a bit uneasy at first. The other male was the only one who was really nice to, it would probably take a good bit of trust for him to show that kindness towards anyone else.
Slowly over time he felt his feelings for the other male changing. Unused to such feelings he immediately tried to push those feelings away. He didn't think Andre would feel the same way anyway. However it was easy to tell the other male cared deeply for him but Kai was to stubborn to see it. Even after Andre saved his life he refused to see it. It might be because Andre had to make him his subclass in order to save his life. He just figured it was the other males way of thanking him for saving his life.
The night Kai became a subclass was a stormy one. Before they could find a place to turn in for the night they were caught in a pretty bad storm. Neither of them really minded bad weather; since, they had had to travel through bad weather from time to time. Considering the weather conditions they weren't really expecting to run into anyone else. So when another servamp attacked them they were caught off guard. Kai was easily knocked aside and the servamp turned his full attention onto Andre. Since Andre was also busy worrying about him he was able to put his full attention into the fight and that was a hazard.
After recovering a bit Kai noticed just how much trouble Andre was in. His had been knocked onto the ground and wouldn't be able to protect himself in time from the other vampires attack. The second the servamp moved to attack was when he made his move. He jumped in between the two servamps just in time to take the blow that was meant for Andre. His friend caught him before he could hit the ground and took off before the other servamp could get over his shock.
